Why is the snapdragon flower referred to as stock?
Q. Why is the snapdragon flower referred to as "stock"? Are other flowers also referred to as "stock"?
Asked by K H - Fri Sep 5 13:18:18 2008 - Garden & Landscape - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Snapdragon and Stock are two different flowers. They have similarities, but they are different. Stock is matthiola Snapdragon is antirrhinum The trouble with common names sometimes is that different flowers (botanically speaking) may share the same common name. Or are called different common names in different areas. Only if you know the botanical name can you be sure of the identity of the flower being discussed.

I got referred to GC Services from a speeding ticket, am I still eligible for a traffic school?
Q. I got my ticket last year, September. I wasn't able to pay it right away, and so I got referred to GC Services which made my fine go up and get my drivers license suspended. I managed to pay it though and get my license out of suspension.. Am I still eligible to go to a traffic school to erase my driving records point?

A. I had this happen to me, but it took me a few years to pay and get my license back, and it was to late for me. I would call just to make sure and if it is the points don't last forever.

Why do front desk secretaries ask who referred us to them?
Q. I am calling several offices to book consultations for rhinoplasty surgery & they have all asked me "who referred you to us? Or if I was referred? I wonder if I say I was referred by someone in particular, they will give me a lower rate quote. Just wondering.

A. I think the question means 'Which doctor has sent you to us' I'm only guessing. Perhaps, they expect you to have consulted some-one medical before launching into plastic surgery.

why are teenagers referred to as children?
Q. I would like to know why teenagers are referred to as children when in reality they are young adults and i mean the ones aged 15 and above. Yes, the legal age of adulthood is 18, but i don't think it's right to refer to under 18's as minors and therefore meaning less intelligent or less important. I mean they are not children. I have a nephew that is 15 but you would think that he is 25 not just by his height or physique but by his intellectual maturity. Anyway, this is just my thought, what do you think?
Asked by Dyana - Wed Aug 15 15:57:50 2007 - Adolescent - 25 Answers - Comments
A. Being a minor does not mean that one is automatically intellectually inferior to adults, but rather that one is under 18 in my view. I teach high school and i refuse to call my students children as i find that they usually respond negatively to it, Yes you are perfectly right that they are going into adulthood and calling them children is a regressive notion rather than a progressive one. This is exactly the reason so many teenagers get all sorts of mixed feelings and ideas about their roles in the family, especially to their parents. Take care

Why are some modes of transportation referred to in the feminine sense?
Q. For example, boats are referred to as feminine, and so are cars. Anyone know the history behind this? I call my car Bessie. Of course that's been the name for ALL of my cars. :) All 4 of them. Don't worry - I'm 36, so it's not like I get a new one every year!
Asked by mellie - Wed Oct 15 07:58:42 2008 - Gender & Women's Studies - 6 Answers - Comments
A. A lot of it is simply tradition but it varies from one culture to the next, for example in English a ship is referred to in the feminine whilst in the Russian it's referred to in the masculine. Neither is a living entity so these are arbitrary assignments of gender to inanimate objects, perhaps it served to provide those who operated such vehicles with a sense of "friendship" with an non-human entity. Men traditionally associate love with their spouses or children and name things after them, so it's not surprising that when men purchase boats, we name them according to our wives/girlfriends or daughters; it's like getting tatooes.

A. It means they gave your application to a manager in charge of hiring people. Don't worry you're still in the running. It just means they're looking over your application now. It doesn't necessarily mean you have an interview but you could still get one. Be sure to call in and check up as well, be go getting! They like that!

Why are some characters referred to by their surname and others by their first name? Most of the time?
Q. In many of the action books I read, for example, there might be a man and a woman. The man is almost always referred to by his last name, and the woman by her first name, most of the time. Or sometimes they are all almost always referred to by their surname. Or by their first name. It's so confusing sometimes!!! Any idea on name etiquette?
Asked by Belladonnablue - Mon Mar 24 21:26:44 2008 - Books & Authors - 3 Answers - Comments
A. I don't think it is anything meaningful, really. I, too, have read books where the character is either referred to by their first name on one page then surname on the next page. At the most it might establish a relationship between two characters (the one character might feel comfortable to just call them by their surname). And hammer in the name of the character in the reader's mind.

why black people are referred to as african americans when USA is a country of immigrants?
Q. USA is a country of immigrants, black people live there for a very long time so why are they referred differently than white people ? sorry for my english, im not from an english speaking country.
Asked by meansweryou - Mon Apr 4 03:08:22 2011 - Other - Cultures & Groups - 5 Answers - Comments
A. Yeah I know. It's considered politically correct. But in my opinion it's stupid. We all live in Anerica so can't we just chop off the African half?? I mean no one calls me European American. They call me white, and I take no offense to it. But if we all called them black, that wouldn't be polite. It's really a double standard. I mean blacks and whites have both lived in America for hundreds of years. At what point do we stop calling them african americans? I just think it's silly.

Has society allowed women to be referred to by their surname and why?
Q. I noticed today that it seemed wrong to refer to Emily Dickinson by her surname. I feel it is because when women are married, it is not unheard of for them to lose their surname. So, has society allowed women to be referred to by their surname and why?
Asked by Nieuwe - Wed May 18 21:58:49 2011 - Gender & Women's Studies - 2 Answers - Comments
A. The answer varies from society to society. In Afghanistan they are ridiculously protective of their women. In Afghanistan, the wife of Bob Smith would be referred to as " Mrs. Jane Bob Smith" "Jane", or "Jane Smith" would be considered profane conversation. In America, (where I'm from) the women tend to be more "liberated" and that includes young teenage girls getting pregnant, nude women on television, and woman flashing their breasts in public. In America, Jane Smith could be considered "Mrs. Smith" or "Jane". In some rare cases, her maiden name might be used.
