Rijeka (Croatian Rijeka, Italian and Hungarian Fiume, other Croatian dialects: Reka or Rika, Slovene: Reka, German: Sankt Veit am Flaum or Pflaum (both historical)) is the principal seaport and the third largest city in Croatia (after Zagreb and Split). It is located on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea and has a population of 144,043 (2001) inhabitants. Historically, because of its strategic position and its excellent deep-water port, the city was fiercely contested, especially between Italy, Hungary, and Croatia, changing hands and demographics many times over centuries. According to the 2001 census data, the overwhelming majority of its citizens (80.39%) are Croats, with Serbs coming in second (6.21%). The Croatian, Serbian, Slovene and Italian version of the city's name mean river in each of the languages. Rijeka is the center of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County in Croatia. The city's economy largely depends on shipbuilding (shipyards "3. Maj" and "Viktor Lenac") and maritime transport. Rijeka hosts the Croatian National Theatre "Ivan pl. Zajc", first built in 1765, as well as the University of Rijeka, founded in 1973 but with roots dating back to 1632. Among other remarkable names, the most notable son of Fiume was probably János Kádár who, as Chairman of the Central Committee of the Hungarian Communist Party, served for more than 30 years as de facto Dictator of Hungary. I will be travelling from Rijeka airport to the tourist resort of Umag, then back to Krk Island a week later. How easy is it to get around on public transport? Any useful websites? Asked by msannyjones - Tue Jul 31 16:09:59 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Its relatively easy and cheap to get around by bus in Croatia - generally there is a bus station in every town with clear signs up giving details of the buses/coaches. Generally there are regular local buses and an hourly type of service for the other towns along the coast or for longer distances it is less frequent. Usually there is an information booth as well but I found it was a bit hit and miss whether they understood me! I think generally you're meant to buy your tickets at the information place. The best thing to do is to search for the tourist information website for each town - usually they will have a section giving the main bus destinations etc. You'll have a fabulous time - Croatia is really great and easy to get around. Answered by lukee - Tue Jul 31 18:33:28 2007 Way to get from venice, Italy to Croatia?
Q. hello, I am looking for a way to get from Venice Italy to Rijeka, Croatia- or a nearby beautiful city in Croatia (?). I assume by train, anyone know a website where I can figure that out? Also, what should I budget to spend each day in Italy (hotel/flight is paid for). Thanks! Asked by jwhitenv - Sat Mar 7 19:47:58 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well, at least there is a catamaran connection form Venice to Umag (Croatia), I'm not sure if it is working all year round but at least you might use it in the summertime. The ship is called "Prince Of Venice" so I suggest you to check it out. Venice is extremely pricey indeed and the hotels there are very very fully booked so you have to prepare to book quite early!
