Noun

Singular river

Plural rivers

river (plural rivers)

  1. A large and often winding stream which drains a land mass, carrying water down from higher areas to a lower point, ending at an ocean or in an inland sea. Occasionally rivers overflow their banks and cause floods.
    • 1908, Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows
By the side of the river he trotted as one trots, when very small, by the side of a man who holds one spell-bound by exciting stories; and when tired at last, he sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea.
  2. Any large flow of a liquid in a single body (e.g., 'a river of blood').
  3. (poker) The last card dealt in a hand.

A river is a natural watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing toward an ocean, a lake, a sea or another river. In a few cases, a river simply flows into the ground or dries up completely before reaching another body of water. Small rivers may also be called by several other names, including stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill; there is no general rule that defines what can be called a river. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; one example is Burn in Scotland and North-east England. Sometimes a river is said to be larger than a creek, but this is not always the case, because of vagueness in the language.

A river is part of the hydrological cycle. Water within a river is generally collected from precipitation through surface runoff, groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (i.e., from glaciers).

What is the best river for white water rafting?
Q. I am going on a road trip with my twin sister, two cousins and my uncle. Doesn't matter about the age. What river is the best? I want intense waters and extreme sports. Any ideas? Also if you know any place that can teach me how to cave dive that would be awesome.

A. Depends where you're going. The Colorado River out of Moab Utah is amazing. That's the river we've been on the most. Westwater Canyon is one of the wildest parts. We also went on the Kicking Horse River up in British Columbia and it was a great trip. The Arkansas River in Colorado is a decent trip. There are some decent rapids on Snake River out of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It's a short run tho but you can run it several times in a day.

What is the best river to kayak in Georgia for a beginner?
Q. I have kayaked the cartecay before and i loved it but would like to find another river that is about the same or a little more difficult. Any advice?

A. There are many rivers for beginners to choose from. It depends on what challenge you are looking for and how convenient it is for you to get to. Check out this Georgia Whitewater website which lists the rivers and different classes. I assume you want to stick to class I and II until you get more experienced. Be safe have fun!

How much would a hockey stick signed by the 1977 river kings team sell for?
Q. I have a hockey stick signed by every team member of the river kings during 1977. It is taking space and i am being forced by my wife to sell it. I know it is worth something, so does anyone know how much they sell for? I am so sorry but it is the Memphis, TN Riverkings.

A. If it were the Mississippi Riverkings then you might be able to find out if someone went on to the NHL or AHL, etc. and you could sell it for a few hundred bucks. But, I'm sorry to say it, the Memphis riverkings team isn't as known so you could only likely sell it for 50-75 bucks top price.
