I'd like to start a produce garden in my (new) sunny San Antonio, TX yard. What will grow, and when?
Q. I just moved to San Antonio from Minneapolis. I'm living on a restricted budget, so I wanted to know if I could grow some food in my yard to feed myself. I'm completely new to the climate and all of the plant life seems foreign; thus, I think it would be unwise to garden in the same way I do in Minneapolis. My yard here is generally sunny, but there are some shady areas as well. Whatever tips you can give me relating to growing produce or general outdoor plant care in San Antonio (or an area with a similar climate) would be fantastic. Thanks!

A. I'd talk to local garden shops before the county extension folks. They'll have a better idea of what does well there. You might also talk to the staff at a local botanical garden or arboretum.. Normally both are very forthcoming with info and knowledgable. Hope you enjoy the new climate.. it WILL be different for you.

What type of transportation can one use to get around San Antonio that is cheap?
Q. I am planning on traveling by Amtrak from Dallas to San Antonio. What type of transportation do I have to use to get around San Antonio?

A. Realistically, if you are NOT wanting to rent a car, the VIA bus (public transportation) if your only real option. San Antonio does not have light rail like the Metroplex does. Have a great visit!

Where are the good places to live in San Antonio?
Q. I might have to move to Texas for a new job. I am kind of excited, and I want to leave Georgia. I know nothing about San Antonio and it's neighborhoods. I know nothing about traffic. What are some good areas to live in, and how easy is it to get around in San Antonio?
Asked by dread head - Mon Jul 12 23:47:51 2010 - San Antonio - 2 Answers - Comments

A. There are bad neighborhoods all over the city I'd say the worst area of San Antonio is the westside the area all the way from 410 West into Downtown crime is high there and the area is mostly very old and poor. Everytime I am around there something bad is happening weither its a murder or a robbery and most of the city "Courts" Housing Projects are in this part of town. Its only great if your trying to get some tacos or trying to learn spanish lol. I live on the far westside however near the 151 freeway and its a nice diverse area it has a good balance of white, black, latinos, asians. There are nice schools, shopping centers, and alot of resturants most of the area is entirely brand new, especially around the Westover Hills/Potra [cont.]

How much sales tax should I charge San Antonio?
Q. I have a client (large company) in San Antonio that I am doing a video shoot & edit for... I am not sure how much sales tax to charge on the over-all invoice... Do I charge them my Local tax amount or am I charging them San Antonio's sales tax rate? ANy help would be appreciated. Tommy I am in San Marcos, Tx... Client is in San Antonio, Tx.
Asked by Tommy O - Mon Mar 10 11:31:28 2008 - United States - 2 Answers - Comments

A. San Marcos has a 8.25% tax rate. That is where you are located, so that is what you would charge for sales tax. There are situations where a business would charge additional USE tax when the customer is in another jurisdiction... but the maximum sales and use tax that can be collected in Texas is 8.25%. For more info, go to and download document 94-105 (about 3/4 the way down the page). However, I'd be questioning whether you should be charging any sales taxes at all. I'm not sure that the professional services you are doing are subject to sales tax in Texas. My suggestion is to call the comptroller's office and ask them. (800) 531-5441

What is there to do in San antonio? and How can I get discounted Fiesta Texas Tickets?
Q. I am planning a vacation to San Antonio. It looks like tickets to Fiesta Texas are 39.99, but obviously I would like to pay less than that. Also are there any other cool attractions that anyone can reccomend?
Asked by cpine505 - Fri Mar 23 00:05:59 2007 - San Antonio - 5 Answers - 3 Comments

A. If you take in a coke can from San Antonio, they usually have a coupon on them for $10 off. Also, you can buy discounted tickets at a Valero gas station. I worked at Fiesta Texas for 5 years. The cheapest tickets can be found at Valero corner stores. Some other things to do in San Antonio is visit the Wax Museum, Guinness World Records, and Ripleyas believe it or not down town. There is also a comedy club down town in the River Center Mall. On Saturday at midnight they have a free adult show. It is really good. The River walk is fun at night. It has a ton of restaurants and interesting people. You can also visit the famous Alamo. It is interesting to see once, but it isn't as great as the movies play it up to be. There are five other… [cont.]

Where can I find the best blueberry muffin in downtown San Antonio, Texas or around the city?
Q. My friend and I are planning on pulling a Golden Girls snippet with cheesecake and coffee, but I'm not a fan of cakes or pies or ice cream and I'm craving a blueberry muffin. I live near downtown and some place local would be great! Oh and just in case no one knows anything about San Antonio blueberry muffins, an odd request I admit, I also like regular (not fudge) brownies :) Thanks!
Asked by bore205 - Fri Apr 22 00:16:34 2011 - San Antonio - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Have you thought about Panera Bread Company? Their pastries are amazing and they have blueberry muffins. There is a Panera in Lincoln Heights, which is not far from downtown. They have delicious brownies, too, but I think they're fudge. A local bakery that has a wonderful reputation is Joseph's Storehouse. It's on St. Mary's St., which is even closer to downtown. I have not been there, but I've heard it's fantastic. Hope this helps; wish I could join you. Sounds like fun. : )

How much do you pay for electricity in the San Antonio area?
Q. I'm looking for people that have homes that are 3000 sqft or larger and run their AC/Heating pretty much 24/7. I usually like to keep ours around 72 to 74 during the day and 76 at night. So how much do other people pay in the San Antonio area for a similar setup?
Asked by OneBigHick - Thu Jun 21 02:05:20 2007 - Renting & Real Estate - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Contact your electrical utility. I'm sure they would be happy to help you estimate this. However, you have to know there are lots of variables - how much shade does the house get? What color is it? More importantly, what color is the roofing material? How much insulation does it have? They probably will only be able to give you an average. If you are looking at a particular house, they could probably give you an estimate of annual electrical consumption, or could give you an estimate of the average for such type homes in the area.

How far is New Braunfels away from San Antonio?
Q. My family is going to San Antonio, S. Padre Island, and Galveston. We thought of going to Schlitterbahn, but some of us are deciding which one to go to. I want to go to the New Braunfels one, since it's bigger, has more rides than the rest, has that river adventure thing, and a ride that was voted the best waterpark ride in the world numerous times. The problem is I don't know the distance between San Antonio and N.B. How long will it take by car to get from one place to the other?

A. Alamo Heights/ Lincoln Heights/ Oak Park [78209] area is definitely low crime and great education, but housing can be costly. The people are friendly, you've great little shopping areas and restaurants all in a close range. Some major points of interests in the area would be: the Quarry Market (Shopping Centre), Central Market H-E-B (Nice, upscale, grocery store), and other places. I would consider that area as well as areas around LP1604 including the area around Bandera, around I-10 and around US281. I'm not quite sure of Universal City (the area of 1604 around I-35N), but I believe Schertz, which is a city about 20-30 mi (15-25 min) from the centre of the city, just right outside is nice as well. Word of advice, try to avoid living in… [cont.]

What towns near San Antonio, Texas are family friendly, have decent house pries and great schools?
Q. We may be transferred to San Antonio area and would prefer to stay south of the metro due to my husband's travel. We have three children so schools, affordable housing and safe neighborhoods are definitely important to us!

A. I would not live south of downtown. The safer side of the city is def the north side. There are plenty of nice school an decent priced houses in Schertz and Cibilo. Ultimately you are gonna have to decide between your husband's commute and what you consider safe.
