How do scientists estimate the amount of Chemical energy produced by plants in a year?
Q. My biology teacher mentioned that about 17 trillion kgs of chemical energy is produced by plants each year. He said that it was an estimate and that there was no way of knowing the exact amount. So I asked how they estimated and he told me to research it. So I was wondering if anyone knew the methods that scientists use to estimate the amount or if there are any good websites that explain it. Thanks :)
Asked by Amarican Boy #1 - Fri Sep 18 22:17:29 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. To determine net energy produced, the easiest way is to dry it, burn it and see how much energy is created (is a little harder in practice than it sounds). Using this method we can find how much energy is produced per pound. Next, we see how many pounds a plant gains per year. Using these estimates for different plants, we can estimate how much energy is produced. Another method is to measure carbon dioxide levels, because plants convert carbons dioxide to oxygen. If we know how much carbon dioxide is produced and how the carbon dioxide levels change, we can estimate how much is consumed per year. From this, we can estimate how much energy plants made. These are just a few of many methods.
