Occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain, it shares a border with England to the south and is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. In addition to the mainland, Scotland consists of over 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides. Edinburgh, the country's capital and second largest city, is one of Europe's largest financial centres. Edinburgh was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. The Kingdom of Scotland was an independent sovereign state before 1 May 1707 when it entered into a political union with the Kingdom of England to create the united Kingdom of Great Britain. This union resulted from the Treaty of Union agreed in 1706 and enacted by the twin Acts of Union passed by the Parliaments of both countries, despite widespread protest across Scotland. Scotland's legal system continues to be separate from those of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland and Scotland still constitutes a distinct jurisdiction in public and in private law. The continued independence of Scots law, the Scottish education system, and the Church of Scotland have all contributed to the continuation of Scottish culture and Scottish national identity since the Union. Although Scotland is no longer a separate sovereign state, issues surrounding devolution and independence continue to be debated. After the creation of the devolved Scottish Parliament in 1999, the first ever pro-independence Scottish Government was elected in 2007 when the Scottish National Party formed a minority administration after talks of a coalition with other parties broke down. I bought the converter with all the different plugs to take to Scotland and Ireland and in small print it says not to use the converter plugs with a battery charger. I have a camcorder and camera that I need to recharge. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Asked by Ruth R - Tue Sep 23 19:48:52 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments A. Rubbish. I'm from Scotland and have used battery chargers many times when visiting other countries. As long as you have the correct adapter plug you'll not have a problem. We did the 7 day Island Explorer tour, and had sooo much fun. The tour guide was a really cool girl who was knowledgeable about all the places we went, the other people on the tour (ranging in age from me - (15 at the time) to late 30s, with mostly 20 & early 30s) were really nice and fun to travel with and the scenery was beautiful. We just toured through Scotland, though. We took a train from London to Edinburgh. I've never taken a Contiki tour, but I've heard mixed reviews. Some people love it, others...don't. I think it really has to do with the guide & the people you're touring with, and you can never know who they'll be. Although it had long been the de facto border, it was legally stablished in 1237, by the Treaty of York between England and Scotland,[1] with the exception of a small area around Berwick, which was taken by England in 1482. It is thus one of the oldest extant borders in the world, although Berwick was only fully annexed by England by the Wales and Berwick Act 1746 (It was not included in Northumberland for parliamentary purposes until 1885.). Also, for many centuries the Scottish Marches on either side of the boundary was an area of mixed allegiances, where families or clans… [cont.] Answered by Dad - Fri Nov 30 17:54:12 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Scotland" Scotland is a country forming the northernmost third of Great Britain.
