The Barbizon school (circa 1830–1870) of painters is named after the village of Barbizon near Fontainebleau Forest, France, where the artists gathered.

The Barbizon painters were part of a movement towards realism in art which arose in the context of the dominant Romantic Movement of the time.

In 1824 the Salon de Paris exhibited works of John Constable. His rural scenes influenced some of the younger artists of the time, moving them to abandon formalism and to draw inspiration directly from nature. Natural scenes became the subjects of their paintings rather than mere backdrops to dramatic events.

During the Revolutions of 1848 artists gathered at Barbizon to follow Constable's ideas, making nature the subject of their paintings.

One of them, Jean-François Millet, extended the idea from landscape to figures — peasant figures, scenes of peasant life, and work in the fields. In The Gleaners (1857), Millet portrays three peasant women working at the harvest. There is no drama and no story told, merely three peasant women in a field. Gleaners are poor women gathering what's left after the rich owners of the field finished harvesting. The owners and their laborers are seen in the back of the painting. Millet here shifted the focus, the subject matter, from the rich and prominent to those at the bottom of the social ladders. Millet also didn't paint their faces to emphasize their anonymity and marginalized position. Their bowed bodies are representative of their every day hard work.

The leaders of the Barbizon school were Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Théodore Rousseau, Jean-François Millet and Charles-François Daubigny; other members included Jules Dupré, Constant Troyon, Charles Jacque, Narcisse Virgilio Diaz, Charles Olivier de Penne, Henri Harpignies, Gabriel Hippolyte LeBas (1812-1880), Albert Charpin, Félix Ziem, Anton Mauve, François-Louis Français and Alexandre DeFaux.

Both Rousseau (1867) and Millet (1875) died at Barbizon.

bARBIZON sCHOOL of MODELING?
Q. I need answers in less than half an hour! please help! D: What does it mean if I made it into Barbizon, school of modeling, but into agency? [[My director said that it guarantees interviews and auditions with clients, but it doesn't guarantee me work.]] Is this a scam? // True?? // If you were me, would you do it? Its $2000 for training btw.

A. No the classes aren't a scam. They really do teach you and you do have more of a leg up on the competition. I can tell you what the director meant, Barbizon is strictly a school, they have no agency and no agency or school can guarantee you work. Barbizon has a placement service after you graduate the classes and they will let you know when local agencies are having open calls and things like that. So yes they can guarantee you meetings with agents and things like that but they can not guarantee that an agent or client will give you work or sign you.

Barbizon School of Modeling/Acting?
Q. I was selected to be a part of the Barbizon School, and I received a 'yes' for my callback. I'm 'full figure', and they want me really bad. The head director, Miss Judy, told my mom that she loves my look and personality so much that she wants to work with me. She told me that I need to get to size 14, simply because I'm only 5'4 and kind of big for my height, and she wants to put me in her 'Petite Full Figure' 'new faces' category. She also said that she wants to change my hair color and haircut, but told me that I'm an eye and mouth model. She really acts like she loves me and my look, and like I said, she personally changed the person they had as my agent (I guess?) just so SHE could work with me. My question is: is it worth the money… [cont.]

A. Eldorado is totally right. As much as I'm sure this is your dream and hearts desire, you and your mom are about to be scammed BIG TIME. Nothing will come of this except emptying your bank account. They don't want YOU real bad, they want your money. Places like this (JRP, Barbizon, etc) are about as close to legalized theft as possible. Of course she acts like she love you and your 'look' - they want you to spend $$$ on their program. An 'eye and mouth model' - is she serious??? I've been around the entertainment industry a long time, and everything she is telling you is a joke. There is a category where some people are 'hand models', but that's it. Anyone with a pretty face is an 'eye and mouth model'. You are being sold on a… [cont.]
