News is the communication of information on current events which is presented by print, broadcast, Internet, or word of mouth to a third party or mass audience.

History of news reporting

In its infancy, news gathering was primitive by today's standards. Printed news had to be phoned in to a newsroom or brought there by a reporter, where it was typed and either transmitted over wire services or edited and manually set in type along with other news stories for a specific edition. Today, the term "Breaking News" has become trite as broadcast and cable news services use live satellite technology to bring current events into consumers' homes live as they happen. Events that used to take hours or days to become common knowledge in towns or in nations are fed instantaneously to consumers via radio, television, cell phones, and the Internet.

Why won't news networks air complete political speech rallies from start to finish?
Q. Often the networks will play small segments from a speech, examples being Obama in Elko Nevada and McCains Michigan town-hall meeting today. I say air these speeches live without commercials all day and cut back on the commentary and political shows. Especial for Headline news. Hey i live in Elko!

A. That's why we have C-Span, which does a lot of that during the course of a campaign. Check the Web site to see what the schedule is. As for the other channels, they have bills to pay. They know showing a 20-minute speech is going to turn some viewers off, so they show highlights. Plus, stump speeches often are the same from day to day -- kind of like hearing the same concert over and over again.

What is a recent news story depicting a company making an ethical decision?
Q. I am writing a paper on professional values and ethics and need an example of a company making the news with positive ethical behavior rather than the all to abundant unethical examples. Anyone have any suggestions?

A. I read around christmas time a story of Sears not only saving the jobs of service men while they were serving, but continuing their pay as well. So that the families would not have to suffer as well, combat pay is not much. That is the only one that comes to mind at this point.

What is the coolest news story you ever saw?
Q. I remember that guy who attached helium weather balloons to a lawnchair, and took off out of his back yard, to soar with jetliners. To me, this is the coolest event in the history of modern man. What fascinating news story sticks in your memory as truly unique?

A. OK, this is a good one (and no, I'm NOT making this up): I read a story about a bank heist that went awry in Argentina. Apparently two guys tried to hold up a bank, the tellers tripped the alarm, the cops showed up, and the robbers took off running. Here's where it gets weird: As the robbers were running away, they were holding hands and stumbling all over the place. Because of this, the cops caught up with them immediately and arrested them. Why were they holding hands and stumbling as they ran? Well, it turns out that one of them was blind! Oh yeah...the one that was carrying the gun was the blind one! Can you believe that? When I read that in the news I was cracking up! I still can't believe it.
