Solvent
|
A solvent (from the Latin solvō, “I loosen, untie, I solve”) is a liquid, solid, or gas that dissolves another solid, liquid, or gaseous solute, resulting in a solution that is soluble in a certain volume of solvent at a specified temperature. Common uses for organic solvents are in dry cleaning (e.g., tetrachloroethylene), as a paint thinner (e.g., toluene, turpentine), as nail polish removers and glue solvents (acetone, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate), in spot removers (e.g., hexane, petrol ether), in detergents (citrus terpenes), in perfumes (ethanol), nail polish and in chemical synthesis. The use of inorganic solvents (other than water) is typically limited to research chemistry and some technological processes. In 2005, the worldwide market for solvents had a total volume of around 17.9 million tons, which led to a turnover of about €8,000,000,000. From Wikipedia under the

From Google Video Search: "solvent" What is the solutes and solvent in Antifreeze? Q. I need to know the solutes and solvent of antifreeze because, obviously, I have no clue. =/ Also, what are the solutes/solvents of Pepsi (sugar&water?) and sterling silver. Thanks! SOLUTE- The substance that dissolves or has dissolved in another substance/solvent. SOLVENT- The substance that dissolved or caused to dissolved the substance. Asked by LP - Wed May 28 22:54:26 2008 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - 1 Comments A. antifreeze is a solution of ethylene glycol (solute) in water (solvent). Here both are liquids so which is the solute is just determined by whichever is less. in pepsi, your solvent is water and the solute is mainly sugar in sterling silver the "solution" is two metals ... silver and copper. Again the "solute" is the one that is less (copper). Answered by Fly On The Wall - Wed May 28 23:05:05 2008 what is the best solvent to use to clean a carburator?
Q. i pulled tha carbs off of my 85 gpz 550. what is the best solvent to use to clean them, without damaging the O- rings or seals. they are also painted black, some of the paint is flaking off. is there something out there that will take the remainder of the paint off that won't require a complete breakdown of the carbs? Asked by kevb4rac - Tue Jun 26 17:13:10 2007 - Motorcycles - 4 Answers - Comments A. If you are talking about the internals of the carbs, then you really need to pull them apart, completely, and get replacement seals. Then use any good carb cleaner from your local auto parts store, and use various implements (wire brushes, tooth-brush, etc.) on the insides, and clean the be-(&*(*& out of them. Then re-assemble (good shop manual is helpful here - and when dis-assembling - use an egg-carton to keep parts separate) with the new o-rings, etc. For the out-side - again, automotive paint remover can be used, but is pretty hard on any plastic or rubber parts, particularly for a bike of that vintage. If they've never been torn apart before, I would bet pretty good money that the seals will disintegrate as you dis-assemble.… [cont.] Answered by k s - Tue Jun 26 17:23:11 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "solvent" |
