A tablet is a pharmaceutical dosage form. It comprises a mixture of active substances and excipients, usually in powder form, pressed or compacted into a solid. The excipients can include binders, glidants (flow aids) and lubricants to ensure efficient tabletting; disintegrants to promote tablet break-up in the digestive tract; sweeteners or flavours to enhance taste; and pigments to make the tablets visually attractive. A polymer coating is often applied to make the tablet smoother and easier to swallow, to control the release rate of the active ingredient, to make it more resistant to the environment (extending its shelf life), or to enhance the tablet's appearance.

The compressed tablet is the most popular dosage form in use today. About two-thirds of all prescriptions are dispensed as solid dosage forms, and half of these are compressed tablets. A tablet can be formulated to deliver an accurate dosage to a specific site; it is usually taken orally, but can be administered sublingually, rectally or intravaginally. The tablet is just one of the many forms that an oral drug can take such as syrups, elixirs, suspensions, and emulsions. Medicinal tablets were originally made in the shape of a disk of whatever color their components determined, but are now made in many shapes and colors to help distinguish different medicines. Tablets are often stamped with symbols, letters, and numbers, which enable them to be identified. Sizes of tablets to be swallowed range from a few millimeters to about a centimeter. Some tablets are in the shape of capsules, and are called "caplets". Medicinal tablets and capsules are often called pills. This is technically incorrect, since tablets are made by compression, whereas pills are ancient solid dose forms prepared by rolling a soft mass into a round shape. Other products are manufactured in the form of tablets which are designed to dissolve or disintegrate; e.g. cleaning and deodorizing products.

What tablets can be taken to stop vomiting in early pregnancy?
Q. My wife is vomiting for almost 90 days, she was tested pregnancy positive , she was advised by doctor not to take strong tablets because it might cause abortion. Please can you advise me on which drugs she should take to completely stop the vomiting?

A. I have three children and am currently pregnant. I have vomited from conception to delivery for all four pregnancies. There are a couple different medications out there. First off, prenatal vitamins usually have a lot of iron which can increase nausea and vomitting so maybe she could try premisis. It is a prenatal vitamin that has lower iron levels but still all the other nutrients. Also there is phenegren, which comes in a pill and a suppository. Which I know suppositories don't sound fun but if she is vomitting all the time she may not be able to keep a pill down. My saving grace has been a med called Zofran ODT. It is a dissolvable tablet so it hits her blood stream without going through her stomach. It is used for chemo… [cont.]

Which type of anti-Malaria tablets work best with the least number of side affects yada yada?
Q. I am going to Indonesia this year on a trip with university and will be needing anti-Malaria tablets and was wondering which ones were best? I have talked to some people that say the most expensive are my best bet. Some of my friends have had anti-Malaria tablets before and suffered sickness and an aversion to sunlight, I'm not sure which ones they took though. Any advice would be much appreciated.

A. Artemisinin, a compound extracted from sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua), has been used for more than 1500 years in traditional Chinese medicine to treat fevers. Over the past few decades, combinations of artemisinin derivatives such as artesunate and artemether have proved highly effective against malaria. Try this natural remedy if you have any problems with pharma drugs. The World Health Organization allows this to be used and distributed.
