Fall lawn care in Upstate New York?
Q. I would like some advice as to what to do about my lawn so that it looks good in the spring. Right now the lawn has a lot of weeds and some bare spots. Basically, I need to grow new grass, feed what's already there and prevent weeds in the spring but I don't know when and what I should apply to do this. Please don't recommend a lawn care company. I am not looking for the perfect lawn but I know there are things I could be doing to improve it. I have a spreader and I'm all ready to get to work. Thanks for your help!

A. I live on Long Island and I like Scotts Products. Now is the time to use WinterGuard with Weed Killer. It provides your lawn with fall nutrients and kills some of your remaining weeds that won't die off. Read the directions, I think you should not put the fertilizer on the spots you want to plant new seed with. To seed in the bare spots, get some fresh top soil and mix in the seeds and keep it moist. - You could also go to scotts.com and sign up for their reminder service. Basically you tell them where you live and the type of lawn you have and they send recommendations on when to fertilize, seed, etc.. Good luck!

Is living in upstate New York as boring as I think its gonna be?
Q. Because from what I've seen it looks pretty boring for someone my age (I'm 22) and my bf has convinced me to move there from Santa Barbara California : / I'm going to do it for sure for school reasons but seriously I'm not into big cities like New York, can Upstate be fun for someone my age, will I be able to meet people my age?? (fingerlake region)

A. What is your idea of fun? If you aren't into big cities then you will be fine, there are barely any. Albany has a population of approximately 95,000 and Buffallo has a population of approximately 293,000. These cities are a fraction of the size of NYC. The Finger Lakes region of upstate NY is beautiful, lots of high elevations, lakes, and scenic views. Gorges are a popular sight to catch, hence the nickname for the city of Ithaca (approx. 29,500 in population) "Ithaca is Gorges". (Beware of drunk college students and hippies!) Coming from Santa Barbara, CA you will most certainly experience a huge culture shock, but it sounds like a great experience to learn from. Make fun anywhere you go, there will be plenty of restaurants, bars, night… [cont.]

Ok but exit 15 doesn't say it is suffern NY...it says it is woodbury...see the link below

What is the average heating cost in upstate New York?
Q. My fiance and I are looking to move to the Steuben County area in 6 months to a year. We're coming from south Florida, where you don't need heat in your home for more than like two days. I understand that the coldest month up there is January, so if anyone knows what the average electric bill up there looks like in that month, please let me know.
Asked by Crystal T - Thu Sep 20 11:42:13 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends how big your house is...I live a bit north of there (Rochester) and for my 1200 sq. ft. house heated with gas, the bill was probably $300-$350 per month, leaving the heat around 68 degrees. Electric would definitely be more. Not sure about propane. Don't forget that you also have the option of fireplaces and wood stoves, which can help specific rooms stay considerably warmer. Steuben Co. is cold, but maybe with less snow than Rochester, so I would think it would be similar in cost. However, I'm not sure who does the utilities to know if the pricing structure is similar. Keep in mind that Dec-Feb will probably be on the high side, with Nov, Mar and Apr not too far behind. Oct and May you'll have to heat for parts of the… [cont.]

What kind of harmless reptiles can you catch in upstate New york?

A. It really depends on where in Upstate New York you are located. One of my favorite snakes to hunt for is the Eastern Milk Snake. They are fairly common throughout most of the state, and can easily be found during the late spring through the summer by flipping at or around dairy farms. Another fine snake to come across is the Black Rat Snake. Their distribution is rather spotty though. As for venomous snakes, there are spotty distributions of Northern Timber Rattlesnakes and very restricted distribution of the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake. If you happen to be in the lower Hudson Valley, there are very healthy populations of Northern Copperhead to look out for. There are only 3 indigenous species of lizard in NY. Two Skinks and the… [cont.]

A. I'm from NNY and they are a pain in the a*s about hand guns!! If you get pulled over and caught with that gun without having a NYS pistol permit its considered a felony. My husband and I went through the same situation. He is from GA and thats where he purchased his pistol.. in GA you dont need a permit to purchase (strange!) Well we didn't know it was a felony until arriving at my parents house and my husband was showing my dad his guns. He gave us the warning about how he may want to apply for a pistol permit. It can take a long time to get, but it's worth it in the long run! Just be very, very careful.. it's very unlikely you will be pulled over and have your entire car searched. We had his gun in the case inside of a suitcase. I… [cont.]

What should I use while fly fishing in upstate new york?
Q. I recently started fly fishing and I am heading out with a couple friends to a river. I don't know what type of fly I should use because alone I have had no luck. My father fishing with a spincaster and is catching browns, walleye, a northern, and weve seen trout. I don't care which Icatch I just want to know what flys I should use/ what line!
Asked by knasty - Tue May 26 12:51:50 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You might be getting a little ahead of yourself. There is no one fly to use when fly fishing, and it will be difficult for someone who is not familiar with the water you're fishing to tell you what fly to use. In fly fishing, you have to read the situation and then decide what to use "on the fly" so to speak. You base your approach on the conditions, and the conditions may change within the course of a single day. The trick is to know and constantly observe the water, fish, weather, etc. The best thing you can do is to observe feeding fish and either see what they are eating or try to figure it out. There are lots of ways to do this -- look at the surface of the water for one thing. If you see lots of the same kind of insect floating or… [cont.]

Swimming holes and other activities in upstate New York?
Q. I'm going to be in upstate New York, around Duchess County, and was wondering if anyone has some swimming ideas? I know some of the holes have been regulated as non-swimming and dangerous. I'm looking for legal or unpatrolled. If you know what I'm talking about, I mean like Bish Bash Falls like 10 years ago when it was still legal to swim in the bottom. Also, just looking to have fun- any other ideas are welcome too! Something like open farms or fruit-picking, or cute towns...

I live in upstate New York and after buying a new home I am looking to plant some flowers.?
Q. This is my first home with a real yard and I am clueless as to what kinds of flowers and plants to buy. It is warm over the summer mostly 70's or sometimes low 80's, with cold winters, but I'm more concerned with what plants will do well now, over the summer months. Looking for pretty colors but nothing to high maintenance since I am an amateur when it comes to gardening. Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Why is upstate New York called upstate when there's still that bit up by Canada?
Q. I lived in upstate New York for about nine years when I was a kid and I still have no idea why that area is called "upstate" when there's still more up there. Is that northern most part too close to Canada or something and the rest of New York disowned it??? Nah, I lived in Fairport. It's a small town right outside of Rochester.
Asked by Jen [Ghoast Kitteh] - Wed Feb 18 18:15:02 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Upstates are just what you call "more north" like maybe farther, but say you lived in upstate than you would think That part of new york is just.. new york. Lemme guess you live in buffalo? Also, if you live in New york city, basically anything green that is 100 miles north is upstate. So it all depends on location. Hope that resolves your Question, and this was the best answer. Cheers.

A. I gardened in Buffalo for 20 years, I'd get started now. Definitely start with a plant, not with seeds and put them in a cooler place in the garden. If all you have is full sun, well go for it anyway, what do you have to loose? Just a few dollars for the plants.

A. I live in upstate New York and before I moved out, my dad grew a pretty nice selection of fruits and vegetables. He grew tomatoes, pumpkins, sunflowers (for the seeds), carrots a couple of times, watermelons, a couple of different kinds of herbs, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and a couple others I can't seem to remember. But you should have no trouble at all growing any of the things I mentioned. One year, he grew a 60 pound pumpkin. It was HUGE! As for what he used in the soil, he always used the general purpose Miracle Grow plant food. I'm not sure if that was the only thing he used, but I know it was the one thing he used every time he planted. Here's some reviews on it if your not familiar with it. I hope… [cont.]
