Virtue

Virtue (Latin: virtus, Greek: ἀρετή "arete") is moral excellence. A virtue is a positive trait or quality subjectively deemed to be morally excellent and thus is valued as a foundation of principle and good moral being. Personal virtues are characteristics valued as promoting collective and individual greatness. The opposite of virtue is vice.

Quotes reported in Josiah Hotchkiss Gilbert, Dictionary of Burning Words of Brilliant Writers (1895).

  • Virtue consists in doing our duty in the several relations we sustain in respect to ourselves, to our fellow men, and to God, as known from reason, conscience, and revelation.
  • The paths of virtue, though seldom those of worldly greatness, are always those of pleasantness and peace.
  • Virtue is not a mushroom, that springeth up of itself in one night when we are asleep, or regard it not; but a delicate plant, that groweth slowly and tenderly, needing much pains to cultivate it, much care to guard it, much time to mature it, in our untoward soil, in this world's unkindly weather.
    • Isaac Barrow, p. 612.
  • No state of virtue is complete, however total the virtue, save as it is won by a conflict with evil, and fortified by the struggles of a resolute and even bitter experience.
  • What the world calls virtue is a name and a dream without Christ. The foundation of all human excellence must be laid deep in the blood of the Redeemer's cross, and in the power of His resurrection.
  • A virtuous youth and frugal manhood always create a Pisgah for the veteran in righteousness, from which he may calmly survey the stars, and read his " title clear to mansions in the skies," while yet in the flesh he can soar on the wings of meditation above the clouds, and catch glimpses of the heavenly world that lies in the placid and everlasting orient before him.

When does humility go from being a virtue to a vice?
Q. I understand that humility is normally considered to be a virtue, even one of the "high" virtues. However I have also read somewhere online that even humility, if displayed in excess, can be considered a vice as well. I don't understand this part of the equation though -- can someone please explain why/how being extremely humble can be a bad thing? For example, is the reason why because it could potentially be viewed as a lack of self-love?

A. Humility is the exact opposite of arrogance. Arrogance is losing your grounding. It is looking down upon people in contempt, because your bloated ego gives you a skewed view of your own strengths, and makes you forget your shortcomings. Humility does the exact opposite. It keeps you grounded. But i think there is such a thing as being too humble. I think some people confuse being humble with being self-effacing. Knowing your own worth, and showing confidence in yourself is not opposed to being humble. Think of monks who have devoted their lives to serving others than themselves. They have given up a lot of the material comforts westerners enjoy, to devote themselves to something higher than themselves. The are, by everyday definition,… [cont.]

Connecting happiness to the human function and to virtue?
Q. (This is not a homework assignment. I am just getting peoples opinions) How does Aristotle connect happiness to the human function and to virtue? How might we might develop virtues?
Asked by Jane - Mon Nov 17 17:36:36 2008 - Philosophy - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Happiness, according to Aristotle, is a "well-lived life". It is not an emotional state, and it is not an emotion. Aristotle says that virtues are a "Golden Mean" between two extreme human traits. For example, the virtue of courage is a mean between the two vices of cowardice and foolhardiness. All in all, we develop Virtues by arriving at some kind of Balance. Balance = Virtue = Happiness
