Washington (pronounced /ˈwɒʃɪŋtən/ ( listen)) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Washington was carved out of the western part of Washington Territory which had been ceded by Britain in 1846 by the Oregon Treaty as settlement of the Oregon Boundary Dispute. It was admitted to the Union as the forty-second state in 1889. The United States Census Bureau estimated the state's population was 6,549,224 as of 2008.

Nearly sixty percent of Washington's residents live in the Seattle metropolitan area, the center of transportation, business, and industry, and home to an internationally known arts community. The remainder of the state consists of deep rain forests in the west, mountain ranges in the center, northeast and far southeast, and eastern semi-deserts given over to intensive agriculture.

Washington was named after George Washington, the first President of the United States, and is the only U.S. state named after a president. Washington is often called Washington state or the State of Washington to distinguish it from the District of Columbia. However, Washingtonians (and many residents of neighboring states) normally refer to the state simply as "Washington" while usually referring to the nation's capital as "Washington D.C." or simply "D.C."

What are the tax implications of living in Washington State and working in Idaho?
Q. I am looking at taking a job in Idaho and am wondering if it is a bad idea to live in Washington and work in Idaho. I know that I will have to pay Idaho income tax regardless of my location, but am wondering if Washington will charge me anything. I will be living in an apartment, so property taxes are not an issue.

What is the best way to travel from Washington DC Intl Airport to UNVA Manassas Virginia?
Q. I am planning to pursue a weekend MBA program from UNVA at Manassas in Virginia. My job requires me to travel and i intend to travel to the school on weekends. Is there any public transport available from Washington DC airports to University of Northern Virginia at Manassas , Virginia on Weekends (Saturday Sunday) Are there any cheap options available in the neighbourhood of the school available where you can bunk in for a night and go to school the next day ?

A. Your question got me interested. I've lived in this area for years and never heard of the University of Northern Virginia, so did some checking. Based on their website, it appears that while the school is licensed by Virginia, it is not accredited--at least by the mainstream accrediting organizations in the US. Were you aware of this? That doesn't necessarily mean that the school isn't good, but it does mean that many employers won't accept a degree from the school, nor can you easily transfer credits to another school. They also don't appear to advertise in the local media, and they have offices/campus overseas--it appears that they are targeting international students who want to get a visa to study in America, regardless of the… [cont.]

Should the Washington Nationals try to celebrate Walter Johnson's career, as a way to bring attention to team?
Q. Just an idea. They're not having that good of a season. Johnson did play for the Washington team, and retired to live in Maryland. Widely considered one of the top 5 best baseball pitchers ever, and was First Ballot for Hall of Fame. On the other hand, he's been dead for about 60 years.

A. seems to me a ceremony would come off as a bit random. Maybe a bobblehead day or something for him. Giveaways usually fill the stands pretty well. More popular teams use giveaways on holidays and other occasions where the stands will likely be mostly empty. So maybe having a Walter Johnson day or something would be cool.
